iPhone 16 Pro Max: A Month of Daily Use, Honest Thoughts

Apple's biggest phone gets bigger still — but does the Camera Control button and Action button actually change how you use it? Spoiler: one does, one doesn't.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: A Month of Daily Use, Honest Thoughts

I've been using the iPhone 16 Pro Max as my daily driver for exactly 37 days. Here's what nobody tells you in the first week of reviews.

Camera Control — Great in Theory

The Camera Control button is a mechanical click on the right edge that opens the camera and lets you adjust settings without touching the screen. In bright sunlight? Life-changing. It's tactile, fast, and keeps your fingerprints off the lens. The problem is the swipe gestures on the button itself — they're finicky in a way that took me two full weeks to get comfortable with. I accidentally switched to zoom mode more times than I can count while just trying to take a photo.

Action Button — The One That Actually Stuck

I configured mine to toggle Silent mode, which sounds boring until you're in a meeting and need to silence your phone one-handed without looking at it. The haptic feedback is excellent. Some people use it for flashlight, translation, or custom Shortcuts — the flexibility is genuinely useful.

A18 Pro Performance

Fast. Stupid fast. I run Lightroom edits on raw files on this phone and it handles them faster than my two-year-old laptop. Apple Intelligence features are rolling out slowly, but the ones that are live — particularly the cleaner notification summaries — have reduced my phone anxiety noticeably.

Battery Life

The best I've ever had on an iPhone. Two full days of light use. One full day of heavy use with screen time over 7 hours. The 5x telephoto means I use the phone less as a camera crutch and more intentionally, which probably helps.
